The first story was the most impactful for me because it really forced me to recon with my preconceived notions of female autonomy under Islam.
The writing style overall was not my favourite, so that contributed to the 4 star rating.

These stories bravely shared are thought provoking and intimate. I am thoroughly impressed by the relationship the journalist and the participants cultivated and their trust is very evident and beautiful.
I struggled at times when the story didn’t feel connected to the theme. The last two stories were very strong in regards to theme and also felt like they had a narrative, where some of the other stories didn’t have a narrative — more of a biographical lense of information. I wanted to hear from the author more, and in that I feel like she lost herself in prioritizing the participants voices over her own. However that was her intention and I respect it despite it separating me from the material.
