Trigger Warning (and probably Spoiler Alert for some)
.

.
Elizabeth's description of her kidnapping and the sexual assault she suffered at the hands of Brian David Mitchell and Wanda Barzee is horrific. Being the mother of a young daughter, it was heart-breaking to hear about Elizabeth's ordeal. Elizabeth is incredibly strong and resilient and thankfully she had a loving family to return to at home. I hope her captors rot in the hell they deserve.

It is not a surprise that this book brings a lot of sadness when you read it. It is a tragic story but she does not go into lots of details about certain things. She does share some spiritual experiences and how they helped her survive and move on with her life.

This was an interesting read. By no means a literary work of art, but I appreciated getting a look at Elizabeth Smart's thoughts and feelings throughout her abduction. It was less about graphic details and more about her reactions to what happened to her and what she did to get through it.

While I agree with some reviewers that her story does have a childlike tone, it's what I would expect since she WAS a child during her abduction.

I’m picky with nonfictions. With that being said this is Elizabeth’s story so I will not critique it. She went through something that no one should have to, and she persevered. She’s an incredible woman.

My Story is incredibly powerful. Elizabeth shares her story about the nine months she spent in captivity as a thirteen-year-old girl. I read her auto-biography in a single day and by the time I turned the last page, I felt both inspired by Elizabeth's strength as well as encouraged to fight through struggles I face in my own life.

Elizabeth shares with clarity the feelings of shame and worthlessness she experienced after being raped. I most appreciated the fact that she never glorified the abuse that happened to her. If you are looking for a book that shares a bunch of gory details, you will not find that here. Elizabeth instead has chosen to use her story of horror as a source of empowerment to other women who have been abused or gone through trauma. Elizabeth writes with maturity and courage, paving the way for girls trapped in situations of abuse to see themselves as valuable, courageous, and beautiful.

3.5 stars. This was VERY difficult to read because of the subject matter, so take it in small pieces. It’s her story of her addiction and captivity for nine months so it’s not going to be a happy read

Hard to read emotionally for me. The tone was young throughout, but I couldn't put the book down. I appreciate her sharing her story.
