I’ve wanted to read this ever since I started watching House of the Dragon, and I’m so glad I finally sat down and did it. Although this is written more as a history book, I found the deep dive into the Targaryen dynasty endlessly fascinating. So many characters are interesting in this book, and the three separate history accounts interwoven provide a nice perspective about how history is never neutral. The world of Westeros remains as sordid and strange as ever, and the dragons add so much. I love everything I can get my hands on about this world.

Reads like a history-book. Might be confusing because of the many names that are recycled generation after generation (HOTD watchers: your Aegon doesn't exist until about the 65% mark)

Other than that is the worldbuilding truly something else. The sheer amount of characters, motives, betrayal, political shenanigans and details is nothing short of impressive.

The book stopped being engaging to me after
Rhaenyra and Alicent died, but that might just be my gay ass

I'd recommend this book to readers who like high fantasy + dragons, don't mind telling over showing along with sparse dialogue and enjoy being a fly on the wall listening to the most dysfunctional family in Westeros

If I’m being honest — I’m not quite sure how to approach this review of ”Fire & Blood” since it reads as more of a historical text at times rather than a traditional novel — but I will say that I enjoyed learning more about House Targaryen & I also thoroughly enjoyed the art that accompanied the text!

It was frustrating at times — not getting the truth of the tale — but I do understand that approach from GRRM.

too many names of too many stupid ass men causing too many goddamn problems. there is a reason that the women in this book are superior and it is simply because they aren't men. so fuck
viserys i, maegor i, criston cole, daemon targaryen, jaeherys i, aegon ii, aemond, unwin peake, rogar baratheon, otto hightower, androw farman, blood, cheese,
and more 🥰.
also srs time, the book is good, but it got docked .75 for being confusing bc of all of the names (and lack of a map) and the other 1.25 for the misogyny, racism, and pedophilia.
