“I’ve died before. It was boring, so I stood up.”
This kicked ass. The anthology format is a terrific fit for Moon Knight, as it allows each standalone issue to carve out a unique story in the grimy corner of New York that Moon Knight operates in. It's far less cerebral or mystic than Lemire and Smallwood's run is, but I like that. While the street-level perspective occasionally falls into a Batman imitation, it's not a fatal flaw, even if those moments are the weakest in the collection. It's when the stories blend that grungy crime-fighting with shades of the supernatural and/or unnatural that it taps into something special. The world of Moon Knight is so rich, and I love how each of these six stories finds the horror, humor, tragedy, brutality, and heroism of the character. It's not a great introduction to Moon Knight, but it's definitely a must-read.
Shalvey and Bellaire's art is tremendous and arguably makes this such a homerun for me. The artwork balances the different worlds of Moon Knight better than the scripts do and brings such a visceral, lived-in to the pages that you can almost smell the dirt and mold collecting in the dark corners of the city. It's stellar work from both artists, and they handily elevate the collection from good to great. This gets a rock-solid 4.5 stars from me.
Moderate: Death, Gun violence, Violence, Blood, Kidnapping, Car accident, Murder, Schizophrenia/Psychosis , Fire/Fire injury, and Injury/Injury detail
Minor: Self harm
