Today was a beautiful day thanks to Heidi McLaughlin and L.P. Dover. I got to escape reality and head to the the Kentucky Derby. Mint juleps are optional but smiles will blossom. The story was a quick fun read taking me on a fantastic journey to a happily ever after.

A date for the Derby was the perfect second chance, wrong side of the horse track romance. Colby is a young horse trainer trying to make his way in the world of horse racing. When he left Armstrong Stables to train the perfect horse he lost his family and the love of his life, Brielle Armstrong whose father owned the stables.

Colby returns three years later as the trainer of Maximus, one of 20 horses in the Derby but it won't be easy. The drama created within the book is AMAZING. Tensions run high as Colby goes to event after event watching Brielle as Brielle watches him. Their love is forbidden. He could loose everything. She could loose everything. The question is, will Maximus win

Horse racing reunites Colby and Brielle as lovers who had no chance of survival based on which side of the Derby horses they grew up on. But sometimes love survives even the strongest of hurdles. Great addition to the series.

I really enjoyed this book. It was extremely creative storyline. Once again, I’m extremely impressed with the duo’s ability to write a seamless story. I really wanted it to go on. Can’t wait to go for a golf date next.

Horses, cowboys, and drama oh my!
Colby is a great character, solid in his principles, dedicated to his work ethic, and doesn't back down to pressure.
Brielle is complex. She easily believed the worst about a person she knew so well and the way she talks to Colby is in great contrast to her thoughts.
I was a little frustrated with these two adults sneaking around, putting duty and reputation before their happiness and the 'making something of himself before he can get the girl' trope. It always reads like he either doesn't think a lot of himself or he thinks she's shallow, but I understand wanting to prove something to both fathers, given how dismissal they were of Colby. It was nice to see Colby's father admit he was wrong.
Whenever an overbearing father gives his daughter an ultimatum between him and the man she loves, I always want her to immediately choose the guy and whooped when Brielle essentially did this and did it with flare.
Had this been a longer book I would have expected Brielle's father to try and do something to Colby's horse before the race. The ending was satisfying and hopeful.
I was promised fantastic heroes and Colby didn't disappoint. William was a great secondary character and it would have been nice to see a jockey or minor trainer flirting with him a little.
I received an ARC of this in exchange for an honest review.

Another win for Dover and McLaughlin! I never realized the drama of horse racing, but it sure does make a great read. Different social statuses kept them from revealing their love to the world, until they finally got to see each other after a lie kept them apart for years. Steamy, romantic, and a little heartbreaking. This is a must read!

Colby and Brielle are like a modern day, southern Romeo and Juliet. Their love is a forbidden one as they come from two different sides of the horse racing circuit. McLaughlin and Dover really paint a great picture in this novella involving the Kentucky Derby and rival horses. I couldn’t put it down and highly recommend it!

Another amazing novella

This was another great by McLaghlin and Dover. I can't say I've ever read a book with a Kentucky derby in it. I've never really grown up around hourses or horse races, but the authors gave me a feel of what it would feel like. To read about Colby and Brielle and their love story, you need to grab this one.
