If you like being on a roller-coaster of emotions and graphic, like REALLY graphic scenes, this is for you. I was chuckling at one second and the next I was feeling like I could vomit, don't watch this while eating.

Gabriel's story starts off lighthearted and cute. I had a couple laughs in the beginning, and I really enjoyed the descriptions of what his childhood was like. The story quickly becomes dark, however, when the war/genocide ensue. The author did an incredible job depicting everything, especially the way the characters developed in the aftermath.

"Perhaps this was what war meant: understanding nothing."

I can't agree more! I'm walking away from this book with a lot on my heart and mind, but the deep-seated hatred of a group of people/the genocide of a people is truly incomprehensible.

This was a beautiful but absolutely heart wrenching story to read. You knew from the start that horrific events were going to happen, and you were just waiting for them

Having just finished Ishmael Beah's A long Way Gone this book contrasts a central message of that one. In this one, the main character does not get corrupted by the civil war. Though he does make a decision to kill someone, he maintains his humanity and tries to be better than the forces around him. I was relieved by this because the other events of the book are so horrifying. My heart goes out to those who had to live through wars like these, and those who will have to live through them. No one deserves that, not the author, and not the narrator.
I always enjoy books written by adults but told through the lens of a child, and this was no exception. I thought the writing was simple but beautiful and the characters were fleshed out enough to care about them. My only complaint is that I felt the book could have spent some time talking about the adjustment of the main character after fleeing Burundi. But maybe that's another book in the making.

The story of the book is set in Burundi (that shares borders and ethnic groups with Rwanda) in 1994, just before, during, and after the Tutsi and Twa genoside in Rwanda (by the Hutu, for those of you that are too young to remember). The protagonist is 10 or eleven years old, the age that I was that year.
Only I was safe in Athens, Greece, getting fragments of the news (no internet back then), and the protagonist of the book was there, in the middle of the "storm".
It is a simply written yet interesting book. The perspective of a young child, of the war and the genocide, might be more naive than that of an adult, but it can be equally heartbreaking.
My daughter is now ten, and I can't even imagine her reading about events like that, forget living them. I think I'll give her this book in a couple of years...
(If you are interested in the Rwandan civil war and genocide, I would strongly recommend the memoir of a survivor, "The girl who smiled beads".)
