4 stars…

I don’t read many books authored by men, so this one was interesting as it provided the male POV.

I don’t want to give away the story, but this book is full of sex and cheating. And double standards right up to the end!

I was really rather intrigued and quite enjoyed the debauchery!

I listened on audio and the narrator was great, even at 1.5 speed!

They should have gone to Florida....

Cape May was not what I expected. It's not the lovey dovey sunny beachy time you might think a newly married couple might spend their honeymoon. It's a seductive and isolating journey of discovery, loss of innocence and betrayal. I consumed it with reckless abandon and was left trembling and passionately moved.

Henry and Effie start their honeymoon discovering each other in a sleepy off-season New Jersey beach town. After meeting a few rich and carefree, glamorous and flirtatious new friends, they decide to extend their stay with trepidation, but soon find themselves in intoxicating situations filled with excessive amounts of gin and tonic and sensual erotic temptations.

Equal parts stimulating and provacative, the writing is an aphrodisiac for a reader. It's steamy and tantalizing, and a passionate exploration of the transgressions of a marriage that just might be doomed before it even begins.

Enjoyable and a quick read, "Cape May" presents honeymooners Henry and Effie visiting Cape May in the fall, when the town and the beach are practically deserted. Effie chose to bring Henry to the childhood summer place where she visited her Aunt and made many happy memories, but finds it a different place in the fall. Soon, the encounter someone else in for a weekend, and there time turns drunken and dangerous. Their neighbors throw parties and drink to excess; sail and dance; and draw them into a very different word than there home near Macon, GA. In the end it's a bit of a coming of age story and a family drama, although the ending wraps up a little too quickly and covers decades of their lives in mere pages.

WARNING: Some passages include very mature content and discussion of sex.

This was really annoying to get through. And 100% unrealistic. I wasn’t sure how it was going to end because it just drug on forever. Spoiler alert: the ending was terrible. And Henry is a hoe.

Unfortunately I found this book very dull and uneventful. The characters were unmemorable and nothing really happens in this book. Theres some alcohol and sex adventures from the newly weds but very pg13. This book fell below the bar for me. This had the potential to be an entertaining book but very much disappointed. There was nothing glaringly wrong but also nothing to make it stand out.

This is the quintessential vacation read, even if you're not on the beach (I read it on a trip to Bloomington, Indiana!). Just like the characters, you lose all sense of time as you sink into the boozy, sexy, and heady honeymoon of Henry and Effie, high school sweethearts. This is definitely not a novel for the prudish or faint-of-heart--it's every bit as steamy as they say, but beautifully-written and evocative of a bygone era.
