So close to finishing but had to keep moving on to other books and now it's due at the library. Might get around to it one day.

I liked this more than I expected, but like all sci fi / fantasy, it lost it's magic when the Professor started explaining the problem. I have willing suspension of disbelief until someone tries to explain it.

This is the eighth and earliest Murakami I've read, and it was fascinating to see elements and similarities that would dominate his later works in their proto-form here. For me, the first half of the book concerned with the misadventures of a "data scrambler" were hard to connect with as the very lore heavy and MacGuffin focused plot doesnt fit with Murakami's style. Yet by the halfway point, the story focuses and delivers a resolution with the all the somber poignancy that I loved in Norwegian Wood and Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki.

I really wanted to like it and I think I kind of did like it for a while, but in the end I just got utterly bored with it. :(
