I take back my comment regarding Shards of Honor being dated--bar a couple extremely minor tells, I think it's really just incomplete. This book ties up the thematic loose ends from and reinforces what was already strong in the former novel. Barrayar is incredibly ambitious, nuanced, and revelatory. Not perfect, I think, but certainly close enough to warrant 5 stars.

I'm glad I didn't ditch the series after reading Shards of Honor because it definitely got better. Cordelia is a strong MC who made me laugh quite a few times. I love her and Aral together. They have a mutual respect for one another and Aral listens to Cordelia as an equal.

The writing showed its age at some points like the use of the term "hermaphrodite". There's also bisexual erasure where it's pointed out that a character is no longer bisexual because he's married to a woman.

Eugenics are a key theme in this book, so be forewarned that ableism is front and center. There's mention of infanticide but only in dialogue.

I'm beginning to feel invested in the Vorkosigan family and am interested to see what the next book in the series has in store.
