Well...this book makes me glad I'm not rich. Funny thing: I saw the cover and loved the character design, so I thought "I'll probably love the characters." I was wrong. So wrong. Samantha is shallow and everyone else is just worse. It's one thing to shed light on the flaws in high society [which is how I get Crazy Rich Asians and Gossip Girl coming in] but the great thing about those were that the characters had redeeming features and the plots were intricate and entertaining enough! This one wasn't! So slow, and almost painful! I'll give it two stars though. For one because it hurts me to give one stars, but I think Zhao is a writer with potential. I think she just needs a little bit more practice before releasing more but the talent is there and I would give her a try again even though I wasn't a fan of this book.

Characters were not interesting and the plot was not paced well. I was hoping for something similar to crazy rich Asians, but this just isn’t it

a girl called samantha starts faking that she's rich in order to infiltrate the high society of singapore and work for a magazine. obviously, she's constantly scared that everyone's going to find out she's a fraud.
this was surprisingly boring. the least thing i expected from a book with this premise. i thought it would be more exciting. but the pacing really ruined this, it was way too slow and i wished the author would just get on with the story. the writing was bad as well, a lot of jumping around throughout the story to give the readers additional information that either didn't matter, or should've been revealed way earlier. the dialogue was unnatural.
the characters were a snoozefest. samantha was irritating and constantly blamed everyone except herself for any inconvenience. i enjoy unlikable characters sometimes, but samantha is not one of them. the side characters were pretty pointless and had zero personality. timothy had the worst case of the zero personality syndrome, since his personality is literally just being rich and attractive. and that's pretty much why the romance sucked as well.
the concept is alright, interesting actually, but the execution is terrible.
