The titular story is interesting enough, and if you’ve read any Lovecraft, you can see the influence Machen had on him (especially in their penchant for going “it was so horrible I can’t describe it to you!).

“The Great God Pan” is an interesting enough story, but it’s not very scary when our current horror goes so much further. “The White People” stunned me in a way as I loved the flow of consciousness style of writing, but hated how much Machen’s writing is just “pagan religions are scary and wrong”. “The Inmost Light” and “The Shining Pyramid” are just boring with a little racism throw into the latter story, to be honest.

Machen writes long paragraphs that go on for pages, which frustrated me so much, and the dialogue was all very weird, but I understand that these stories come from a different time, and I respect them for what they are. 5.5/10

Oh eldritch horror genre. If I could, I would go back in time and beat the stuffing out of hp lovecraft. Not to death, just to give him a legit reaon to fear and loathe by gay asian ass. He had some decent concepts, it's just that the concepts are caked in dried shit and fuck, and all other concepts [stories, etc] derived from that are just as caked.

This is an author who lived in to 1800s, wrote some lovecraftian horror, and was just as racist, antisemitic, anti romani, anti black, sinophobic, and etc etc as hp lovecraft.

I don't recommend this book based on the above, and that the titular story--The Great God Pan--is the only story worth reading. The other stories are meandering, dated in prose and theme, often resolve weakly, and are just as interesting as the horror books you buy at airport cafes for too much money because you forgot to charge your ebook reader.

In this books favor, there are footnotes. I suggest pira uhh purchasing an epub version to more easily navigate them. My epub copy has them pop up when tapped. I appreciate this so I am better able to keep track of what's going on in the current story.

And by the way, this anthology / author  loves its shell games. You'll start a story and suddenly a character is breaking into a brand new story within the current story. Can you keep up? Maybe. At the halfway point I was listing through, and gave up on content warnings.

The content warnings, by the way, are catch all. Something else which irritated me specifically of the editor was them leaving in graphic anti black racial slurs and scenes of anti indigenous violence. You could add notes about amorinis, but not excise blatant hard r n words? Hm.

One last thing: the word qu**r is used a lot. ALOT. Mainly in the historical sense of 'unusual' but if you're not keen on that word, skip this. Or edit your digital copy to switch out the q slur with 'unusual'. It makes very little difference to the story.

Content warnings:
