This is written definitely in a younger YA style than I typically enjoy. The narrative frequently gets redundant from over-explaining, and basically anytime something is shown, it’s then immediately told as well. Although a lot of the subject matter is definitely mature, the audience is definitely more of a mid-teenage group, and is really successfully written for that target audience.
Still, I came to really fall in love with the characters and Noni did a really good job of introducing lots of different mysteries/questions as the narrative went on, even if most of the answers were obvious to me as an adult reader.

I didn’t expect that ending?!
This book surprised me in a good way. I really like the worldbuilding and Kiva as the main character is interesting, to say the least.

Love interest and main character give me major Gary and Mary Sue vibes. Of course, they’re white and LI is the only one with a specific and rare eye colour. Blue/gold which gives me Maas' vibes (Aelin is described to have a similar eye colour, I think).
The logic of „if you’re a super dangerous criminal who might have magic, you’re forced to participate in this trial series that includes all four elements and if you survive, you can leave by law“ still baffles me. If you don’t have magic, you die. Spoiler: magic is super rare and belongs to the royals.
Irking extra: the maps are not ebook friendly. World-building is lacking as it is but the maps are also useless.

This book was great. It had so many amazing, and natural plot twists. I only guessed 1 of them, and part of 2 others. Nothing was set up that wasn't followed through on. The characters are all 3D, and morally realistic, which I personally really enjoyed. That's not even to mention the writing. Lynette Noni's style is spectacular. It flows so naturally, and is very enjoyable.
The one nit-picky thing was a plot point I personally didn't like, which is why it's 4.75, rather than 5.It bothered me that we never got to know Tilda despite her being right there. I would have had a problem with it regardless of her being Kiva's mom, but that made it more frustrating. In the same vein, I get why it was done, but I feel that there could have at least been one full sentence exchanged
I would highly recommend this book for anyone who loves fantasy but is sick of repetitive plots. There's a few common tropes, but they are well done, with unique takes. I'm really looking forward to the next book.

Mir wurde vom Verlag über NetGalley ein kostenloses Rezensionsexemplar des Hörbuchs zur Verfügung gestellt, vielen Dank dafür!
Das wichtigste zuerst, ja ich mochte es sehr, kann und werde es weiterempfehlen.
Aber jetzt mal von vorn.
Fangen wir mit dem Titel an. Bin absolut kein Fan, verstehe nicht wieso man sich ausgerechnet für den entschieden hat. Der Originaltitel ist 'The Prison Healer', also 'Die Gefängnisheilerin'. Ergibt ja auch Sinn, ist vollkommen verständlich wenn man bedenkt dass die Protagonistin im Gefängnis Heilerin ist. Im deutschen hat man dann den Titel (ohne das 'the' vielleicht der einfacheren Aussprache zuliebe) übernommen. 'Prison Healer'. So weit so logisch. Warum man dem Buch jetzt den Untertitel 'Die Schattenheilerin' gegeben hat verstehe ich dagegen nicht wirklich. Erstens hat der Untertitel nichts mit dem Buch zu tun. Ja Kiva ist Heilerin. Aber sie heilt weder Schatten, noch ist sie ein Schatten. Sie heilt nicht mit, durch oder in den Schatten. Ich gebe zu an ihr ist so einiges shady aber Heilen ist so ziemlich das einzige dass sie ganz offen tut.
Außerdem heißt das Buch jetzt: 'Gefängnisheilerin - Die Schattenheilerin' und das klingt einfach nicht gut.
Kommen wir nun zum eigentlichen (Hör-)Buch.
Wie schon oben erwähnt mochte ich es wirklich sehr gern.
Gesprochen wird das Hörbuch von Nina Reitmeier. Ich habe schon ein paar von ihr gesprochene Hörbücher gehört und hatte noch nie Grund zur Beschwerde. Sie spricht stets klar und verständlich, und auch bei 2.5-facher Geschwindigkeit konnte ich ihr noch gut folgen.
Der Text ist in vertretbare Abschnitte eingeteilt, die gut und ohne Stocken oder Stottern ineinander übergehen.
Nun zum Buch selbst.
Der Schreibstil ist sehr flüssig und verständlich, ich konnte der Handlung immer ohne Anstrengung folgen.
Die Charactere sind unterhaltsam und auch die Nenenfiguren sind gut aufgebaut und haben angemessene Tiefe.
Unser Hauptcharakter ist Kiva, eine junge Heilerin die schon als Kind gemeinsam mit ihrem Vater in Zalindov (dem Titel-gebenden Gefängnis) eingesperrt wurde. Das Buch ist aus ihrer Sicht geschrieben, es ist also von Vorteil dass sie sehr sympathisch ist. Sie ist willensstark, einfühlsam und pflichtbewusst in ihrer Arbeit. Allerdings ist sie etwas uneigenständig und ich bin mir noch nicht sicher ob ich die Tatsache dass sie keine der ihr auferlegten Prüfungen aus eigenem Antrieb meistert, sondern immer Hilfe hatte mag oder nicht. Einerseits steht es ihrer Charakterisierung als unabhängige Frau entgegen, zum anderen ist es erfrischend mal in einem Jugendbuch zu sehen, dass ein Hauptcharakter nicht unmögliche Hindernisse überwinden kann, nur weil er eben derHauptcharakter ist. Nein Kiva, ohne Hilfe währst du tot. Verleiht dem ganzen etwas mehr Realismus.
Der letzte Plottwist am Ende passt leider nicht so ganz zu Kivas, bisher doch eher friedliebenden Character, aber zu diesem Plottwist später mehr.
Der wohl zweitwichtigste Character, Jaren, ist ein neuer Gefangener in Zalindov. Als er uns das erste Mal vorgestellt wurde mochte ich ihn eigentlich ganz gern, das hat er jedoch schnell verspielt indem er viel zu aufdringlich mit Kiva geflirtet und anzügliche Bemerkungen gemacht hat obwohl er sie erst ganz kurz kannte. Kurzum als er zum typischen YA love-interest wurde. Zum Glück lässt das aber im Laufe der Story wieder nach, sodass er mir zum Schluss wieder sympathischer war (ich habe ein sehr schlechtes Gedächtnis :) ). Auch die Enthüllung gegen Ende passt gut zu seinem Chatacter, nämlich dass er zu gutherzig ist um seine Aufgaben wirklich zu erfüllen.
Mein Lieblingscharackter ist aber auf jeden Fall Naari, eine verlässliche und hilfsbereite Gefängniswächterin.
Zwischen Kiva und Jaren bahnt sich ganz klar eine Lovestory an aber bis auf die oben schon angesprochenen unangemessene Flirtereien entwickelt sich das ganze sehr langsam, was mir fantastisch gefällt.
Zalindov als Schauplatz ist sehr interessant, hätte aber ein bisschen besser beschrieben werden können. Und vielleicht wären ein paar mehr Gefangene kennenzulernen auch keine schlechte Idee gewesen. Aber die Brutalität der Wachen und die totale Gleichgültigkeit gegenüber dem Wohlergehen der Gefangenen kommt gut zur Geltung.
Auch die Handlung selbst fand ich ziemlich gut, die ständige Bedrohung der Rebellen und das Unwissen was unsere Protagonisten mit ihnen zu tun haben könnte macht das ganze sehr spannend. Ich mochte auch die Prüfungen, sowas gibt einer Story immer eine gute Struktur.
!!OK ab hier massive Spoilerwarnung (Inhaltswarnungen findet ihr im ketzten Absatz nach den Spoilern)!!
Ganz am Ende haut einem das Buch gleich mal noch 2 riesen Plot-Twists um die Ohren.
Der erste, und besser verständliche der beiden ist, dass Jaren kein gewöhnlicher Gefangener ist sondern der Kronprinz der sich eingeschlichen hatt um die gefangen genommene Rebellenkönigin auszuspionieren. Diesen twist mochte ich eigentlich sehr gern. Er macht auch Sinn im Kontext der Story.
Der zweite Twist ist dass es sich bei eben jener Rebellenkönigin auf die es Jaren abgesehen hat und um deren Überleben Kiva sich vergeblich bemüht um niemand anderen als Kivas Mutter handelt. Und Kiva weiß dass auch. Und jetzt will sie den Thron zurückerobern. Auch bei diesem Twist bin ich mir noch nicht ganz sicher ob ich ihn mag. Dass es sich bei Kiva heimlich um jemanden besonderen/königlichen handelt war eigentlich von vorn herein klar. Aber mehr weil das halt in Jugendbüchern nunmal so läuft als dass der Text es wirklich angedeutet hat. Und es wurde auch ständig betont dass nur Menschen mit königlichem Blut magische Fähigkeiten besitzen. Da war mir dann eigentlich gleich klar dass Kiva bestimmt irgendwann magische Heilkräfte entwickelt (und das tut sie dann auch). Aber dass Kiva das tatsächlich auch wusste war eine Überraschung. Was durch diesen Twist tatsächlich endlich Sinn ergibt ist, warum Kiva den Rebellen so viel Sympathie entgegenbringt obwohl sie doch seit ihrem siebten Lebensjahr von der Außenwelt abgeschnitten war und über die Vorgänge im Reich gar nichts wissen konnte.
Im Allgemeinen wirft diese Enthüllung jedoch mehr Fragen auf als sie beantwortet. Wieviel von dem was wir aus Kivas Sicht gelernt haben war gelogen? Hat Kiva ihre Mutter gleich wiedererkannt? Hat ihre Mutter sie wieder erkannt? War dass warum sie nur Kivas Namen sagen konnte? Wenn die Tochter und der Ehemann der Rebellenanführerin im Gefängnis saßen warum wurde dann nicht schon viel früher eine Rettungsaktion gestartet? Warum erst jetzt? Hegt die Prinzessin rebellische Gedanken? Ich dachte das Magiesystem wäre elementar, warum kann Kiva heilen? Hatte Kiva mehr Kontakt nach außen als wir gesehen haben? Wusste sie wirklich nicht ob oder seit wann ihre Mutter erblindet war? Mag Kivs Jaren wirklich oder benutzt sie ihn nur? Fragen über Fragen.
Mann darf nicht allzu genau darüber nachdenken sonst fallen einem bestimmt ein paar plotholes auf (aber zum Glück nehme ich meine Bücher sowieso meistens nicht so auseinander, ruiniert den Spaß).
Auf jeden Fall bin ich sehr gespannt wie es im nächsten Band weitergeht, in der Hinsicht war das Ende super aufgestellt.
Zum Abschluss: gutes Buch, sehr spannend. Kann den zweiten Teil nicht erwarten!
