These fairy tales were entertaining if not a bit predictable at times. The Grimm fairy tales, which I was already more familiar with from Disney adaptations prior to reading, fit more to my tastes, but I did like learning the fairy tales of the Japanese culture. While reading these I was reminded how much environmental affects stories such as these, because many of the tales featured Japan’s geographic features such as valleys and mountains and the island itself as essential to the plots.

Like most collections of short stories, there's a wide range here. Some I loved, some I enjoyed, some reminded me of more familiar/European stories, some were totally new and different and a few I found very disturbing and would like to never read again. Overall, and enjoyable reading experience, and I would read this collection again, just skipping over a few this time.

A charming book of fairy tales from Japan. A great read for those interested in fairy tales of all types, but especially those from other cultures. They provide insight into Japanese culture.

Just interesting to read. Some of these stories were crazy, but not any crazier than most of the traditional western fairy tales. I did think it was funny that apparently stepmothers get a bad rap all around the world.

I started listening to this collection of twenty-two folktales from Japan as I thought it was on my list of 1001 Children's Books You Must Read. Yet when I finished, it seems not to be on this list. It should be, I think.

The stories in this audiobook were gentle in comparison to other stories from other cultures that I have read. The endings are generally nonviolent, and bad guys in the stories generally end up being changed into good people. The stories seemed more dreamlike, with characters taking actions that are unexpected and with events taking place that are unexpected.

Audiobook has iffy pronunciations but it's not that noticable at 2x speed. Good translations though.
