This book was beautifully written, and I truly felt like I was transported into a very real world with very real characters. It made me laugh, it made me tense, it made me cry, it guided me, heartwrenchingly, through the whole spectrum of human emotion. Refreshingly, characters weren't perfect, or likeable all the time -- but they were honest. They were human. 
I am very conservative with my book ratings, and this is the highest I have ever rated a book, to date -- because I cannot think of any other books that felt quite as honest, and as human, as this one.

underwhelmed and sad about it
was expecting evelyn hugo to be at least minimally likeable, but man, I had a rough time with her character. there were golden nuggets in here for sure, and something about TJR's writing keeps me reading even when I'm less than hooked. I just really wanted this one to blow me away like it has for so many people

I reeeeeally didn’t like the “main character.” She bothered me to no end because in my eyes she was like cringey woke millennial. Evelyn Hugo on the other hand? LOVED her. I was so glad most of the book focused on her because she was so interesting and I was so invested in her life.

I don't feel like I can give this 5 stars, as I don't think it was perfect, but it was a wild ride and one I'll probably think about for a bit. (And I did finish it in 2 days, so you know I liked it a lot!) This is my first TJR book and I didn't initially connect with her writing style; it felt a little "basic" during the book's initial exposition with Monique. That being said, I think her strength really lies in writing frank, honest dialogue between characters with opposing views/desires, so once those scenes started coming up, I enjoyed the writing a lot more. I think the emotional climax(es) are also written well, portraying the strong emotions the characters feel in the heat of the moment.

This is a book that I felt compelled to keep reading not necessarily because of "twists", but because I wanted to see how the story unfolded. The plot moves along at a quick clip (I would say somewhere between medium- & fast-paced), and I wasn't left unsatisfied when it came to finally seeing the full picture. Some parts of the story I saw coming, some I didn't, but I am very impressed at how TJR crafted a narrative encompassing much of one woman's 80-year life. I also really enjoyed the little clippings from gossip rags and magazines to expand on the plot/world-building in certain chapters.

I was originally going to give this two stars, but I decided it deserved one more for the pure fact that I did get emotionally invested enough to tear up a few times. Overall, however, I really just did not jive with TJR's writing style. It was too expository even during moments that we were zoomed in to either Evelyn or Monique's perspective. Speaking of perspectives, I found the voices between Evelyn and Monique far too similar to the point I'd sometimes miss when we'd switch to another. I think I'm more disappointed than anything. That, of course, is my own fault for giving in to the hype around this book before reading. If you like contemporary fiction, this is definitely worth a look, but I wouldn't say it's anything overly special in my opinion.
