the two major tone shifts left me speechless, I've never seen an author be able to do that before. More please

Started out great then fizzled out a bit. The mystery of Nod was incredibly intriguing to me to begin with, but as the story progressed it became a bit clichéd and repetitive. Certain segments such as the octopus' development and the really eerie exploration of the Nodan ecosystem were really enjoyable. Other plot threads were completely forgettable. Overall a decent sequel. 5.5/10

First spiders, now octopuses - what lovely ideas the author has. This work is not as strong as Children of Time. The communication with the octs is harder, and I think the author struggles to explain how it works. He tries but in the climax stops trying and simply allows it to happen. Good decision. I think the story could have been improved by less early attempts to explain HOW it was happening, as Drs Dolittle - Helena and Portia - were learning. Interesting characters, creepy characters, sad characters abound. Throw in a Pinocchio AI and there's quite a soup brewing.
The end suggests there's a sequel coming. I'm not sure that's a good idea.
