It’s an anthology of fantastical stories aimed at middle grade trans kids: stories of non-binary kids on other worlds, trans princesses and magic users, and fantasies that trans kids deserve to imagine themselves in.  I think it may be the only of its kind.  It’s edited by Amy Eleanor Heart and has a wonderful diversity of writers and stories.  Z has read it cover to cover many times.  Like many works aimed at queer and trans kids, it was originally funded by Kickstarter, because we have to create our own future and our own reality.

There is a 99% chance that readers of all identities and ages will find something precious and comforting in Amy Eleanor Heart, et. al's collection of short stories that offer strength and hope for transgender and non-binary children world wide. After the first few lines I knew that this book would positively shape the future stories of these children, and immediately added it to my future classroom or personal library list.

A line from the anthology that can take many shapes, based on who reads it, is "This planet is so full of weird and wonderful things that I can barely contain myself most of the time," (51). I take it as an optimistic point of view out of delightful and zealous curiosity! Something each child should never be without in the wide and ever changing world and those they meet along the way (including themselves)

Of the twelve stories, "Neshnaj, the Gentle Grey Giant", "99% Chance of Magic", and "A Shape Shifting Spell" were my favorite. All centered around individuality and the family, two areas of one's life that have the greatest influence and ripple effect from their thoughts and feelings.

Although I am no more than an ally for this group of children, and of any group of children who might be cast aside for being a 'minority', I am a proud ally and will absolutely advocate for this book and future ones like it.

This was an incredibly tender collection of trans fairy tales and magical stories. I didn't know what to expect going in, but once I started I was hooked on the different worlds these stories presented. I do think that if there were to be a second edition, or a second anthology, the illustrations should be color and lean away from the more heinously digitally stylized art. Kids need rich, vast spectrums of color, and art with textures and tones. That's part of the magic of fairy tales!
