I'm just going to start this off by saying that the twist in this book was EXCELLENT! I didn't see it coming at all and it really hooked me in. I read the last fifty pages of this book on the edge of my seat. That said, I didn't feel the same way for the first 260 pages. This book is good throughout, but it's only the end of the plot that brought it up from more of a neutral three stars. But the story really drops you into the time period, and I felt the fear and dread of Amsterdam's occupation along with the characters. Speaking of, the characters were quite fully fleshed and strong. I rooted for every one of them. (Though I'm quite partial to Mina. My favorite character!) The only things I would really suggest would be to spread out the bombshell reveals to keep us turning pages throughout the whole book. There were A LOT of bombshell reveals, and all in the last few chapters or so, so I think the first bit could be shortened and the last bit spread out. I very near got whiplash racing through those final pages! And maybe a little foreshadowing? I could have never guessed the twist about Christoffel, which is generally a good thing, but I would've appreciated some hints to make me go "AHA!" instead of "HUH?" There are also a few VERY MINOR grammar/continuity mistakes, which aren't too bad, but they are a little jarring when you spot them. Overall, my consensus is READ THIS BOOK. It's a rollercoaster that you won't regret riding.
Moderate: Child death, Death, Antisemitism, Grief, and Death of parent
Minor: Homophobia, Sexual harassment, and War
