Mayas Tagebuch by Isabel Allende

The book tried to be too many things at once. Mystery (multiple), family drama, coming-of-age drama, cultural, diary, travelogue... And it didn't quite gel together. The flashback structure tried to meld into the current day one, and many times it was disjointed and felt choppy. I think this could have been a better book than it was if it picked 1 or 2 strong narratives instead of trying to be everything at once.

This has been sitting on my book shelf for a few years and after trying to start a few other books, I decided to give this one a shot. I wasn't sure about it when I started it, but I'm about 25% into it and I really like it. It took me awhile, but once I got into this story I really enjoyed it.

This book felt more drawn out than it needed to be, and yet the part I found most interesting (the stories during the Pinochet dictatorship) was glossed over rather quickly. I appreciated Allende’s writing, but I found Maya to be rather grating.

A final possibly petty note, but I thought the persistent use of “washroom” and other Canadian-isms on an American teenager was just sloppy on the translator’s part.

Intrigante e interesante.
