The story and setting were unique, but the plot was a bit slow at the beginning, and a bit predictable. What struck me more was the writing style. Rather than all the imagery being visual, it was all about the sounds and rhythms of the setting and community. Silence was stark when it happened, and any action had its own sort of cadence. Fit with the musical background of the main character very well.

This too has faded in my memory. I liked it enough to borrow the audio for book 2 (which I don't own), but it just sat on Libby until the loan expired. Idk, I guess I lost interest.
I liked the audio narrator, which is good bc I've had the physical book sitting on my shelves for a while and needed a push. I enjoyed the story and the characters despite there being dumb romance subplots. The main one DID make a lot of sense for...Reasons. Some things didn't make sense until the end which was satisfying to see things come together while also feeling like a bit of a slog for the majority of the book where you're kind of in the dark.
The "world" (if you will) was rich and believable, and the community dynamics were interesting to follow. I also really liked Mateo's family and friends!! I remember the aunts(?) and best friend, but not names. The way music was described and discussed in this book was really beautiful and a definite highlight.
I might try the audio for book 2 again another time, as this is only a duology. If not, I'm happy with this first book as an enjoyable listen ☺️
