This was a great concept but it was simply too cheesy for me, and I love cheesy. The main character was annoying to me and never got better. I love Harry Potter and there was too much Harry in this for me. The love interest was not necessary and I would have rather seen a love story between the sisters be the main plot. There was so much potential here and it’s a quick read, but I had higher hopes based on the description.

This was a fast and easy read, exactly what I was looking for. However, parts of it just seemed a bit juvenile and made me cringe a bit more than I was hoping to. I didn’t appreciate the demeaning way that the main character talked about the pageant contestants in the first half of the book, so it was good to see her shift of attitude throughout. I don’t know, this may be right up someone else’s alley but it just wasn’t really for me, despite the fact that I don’t have a problem with most parts of this book. I would still recommend it if this is what you’re looking for, as you get exactly what is advertised.

The Accidental Beauty Queen is a great bit of escapism. It's silly, over the top, and completely predictable. It's also witty, often hilarious, loads of fun, and maybe even a little bit of a lesson about seeing things from both sides of the coin before passing judgment. There is romance - well, there's instalove, which I'm not usually a fan of, but it's not really the focus here. The story is about identical twins, Charlotte and Ginny. I'll admit, I wasn't crazy about Ginny for most of the story. She has a bad case of "It's all about me" syndrome and doesn't even consider how things affect others. However, she doesn't make excuses for it, and she is redeemable. Charlotte isn't exactly on this trip for entirely selfless reasons either, but her plans get derailed and she finds herself smack in the middle of interviews, swimsuit competitions, and finding a talent to wow the judges. All in all, the angst level is low and the fun is high for engaging and entertaining read.

This read like a Hallmark movie, which makes sense given the author has written several! I loved watching Charlotte grow as she was forced to enter her sister’s world and how she found herself again.

DNF

I bailed out, screaming, at the paragraph where the heroine thinks the hero being more than passingly familiar with dog names from HARRY POTTER is somehow him dredging up an obscure lit reference. I’m a librarian and can’t deal with the idea that liking HP is a quirky character trait when that is far from me or most of my colleagues.

Didn’t make it far enough to see if heroine would make a snarky comment about how evil dog earing books is.
