Bennett returns home from 3 years in the Congo only to find that he's been declared dead and his work has been stolen and turned into an inaccurate book. He learns this fact in the midst of a book club discussing the novel and he accidentally knocks over Phillipa in his haste to leave the room and is instantly smitten by her. Phillipa is a bookish wallflower and loves adventuring in her books but when she meets the rough mannered adventurer in real life she is surprised at how much she enjoys his directness.
This was a good story but it annoyed me how basically everyone in this book, including the FMC didn't believe that Bennett could have any interest in Phillipa in comparison to her much prettier sister for basically the entire length of the book.

I really enjoyed this book and I was especially fond of Flip. I did only give it four stars because while I enjoyed the ending it just left me feeling somewhat giddy not the giddy where you just wanna clap your hands but all in all I did like the book and Bennett Wolfe was a devilish hero who I am still crushing on a bit especially those "jungle green" eyes...ohh yeah!!

Fluff (if you like insta-love, forgettable characters, and unrealistic plots) with some not good stuff...

Normalizes colonizing behaviors & beliefs. The MMC is an "adventurer" whose recent stint was in the Congo. He devalues the Congolese (while fostering a greater respect for the animals), uses Swahili, and cherishes relics he has brought back to England. Look, I know this is a time period piece and the Brits were greedy, ignorant, colonizing bastards. I would have appreciated a stronger attempt at countering/challenging these beliefs (or omitting them - the repeated use of "savage" was unnecessary and wrong).

Virgin sex bordering on coercive.
