I liked all the characters in this book, especially Jessie and Austin. I also liked how this felt like a real life setting with a touch of magic so the focus is more on Jessie’s growth and her relationships with the other characters. I think my only critique is that it was clear to me that this was a start of a series, and the book wouldn’t be able to stand on its own. It’s a fairly slow first 50-75% setting everything up and then all kind of action takes place in the last 25%. I was entertained throughout the whole thing, but I felt like it could be paced better.

Yes! On to book two. A midlife woman starting over from her old life and is offering a “caretaker “ over this old haunted house. The comedy and steamy slow burn flirting with Austin, the unofficial Alpha of the town. And the other guardians or caretakers are beyond funny! If you trust my bookish taste, then this is a MUST READ!

The main character Jessie really bothered me and I couldn’t get past her. I hated how she was constantly complaining about old she was at 40yr and how much she ached. Girl… go see a doctor if it’s that bad! Not only that, she did and said stuff that just made absolutely no sense. I just got bored and couldn’t bring myself to read any more of her story.

Funny and Unique

I love KF Breene. Her books are full of humorous moments, snarky lines, and characters with whom the average person can identify. This new series is no exception and she introduces several new characters that are as exciting and appealing as the main character, Jessie. You will fall in love with Niahm, Mr. Tom, Austin Steele, and Edgar. So well done; I can’t wait for book 2!

There is so much that I loved about this story. The heroine is a middle aged divorcee looking for a serious change in her life. She is drawn to a creepy mansion, into a web of magic and a little bit of sexy intrigue. My favourite thing is that she doesn't want to revert to her younger self but be accepted for the sexy, confident, wise version of herself that she has spent all that time working on, wrinkles included.
The characters here are not spry young things but quirky, crazy, sassy Supernatural beings with age on their side, if not sensibility. They are complex and whole with their pitfalls and some strengths. Don't even get me started on the alpha who actually listens... be still my beating heart! Used to brooding, bossy and single minded alpha males? Austin Steele is all those things with a touch more compassion, understanding and a working set of ears. In all, a real man.
Highly recommend!
