This book was so dull. The characters had no personality, and the insta-love was truly gag-worthy. And seriously, "Jinx"? Really??
+1 star for good setting
+1 for fun Irish slang like "banjaxed" and "on the razz"
-3 for literally everything else

Quality YA+ fantasy that shows its strong Irish roots. I love that it didn't feel the need to be anything but what it was. Looking forward to the other books.

YA novel set in contemporary Dublin, where our own world and the world of the fae overlap and interlace in ways that let those who know how travel between.  Forbidden love, treacherous sidhe, dear old grimy Dublin, the fate of many worlds in the balance - so many boxes ticked! Great characters, a deep understanding of Irish mythology and a fast paced storyline kept me gripped; also Dublin feels like a character in its own right, which I absolutely love.

I loved this. There can be a tendency with YA to be set in an 'Anycity' or to tell yet another story of an alternate London, but this book takes Dublin and makes it almost another character, setting it so firmly it couldn't work anywhere else. I love Irish mythology and this is a very skilfully woven story that brings together all of that yummy hard-to-pronounce magic and contemporises it effortlessly. I like Izzy, she has her annoying teenage moments at times but overall she's a more likeable female YA protagonist than many, and she seems to have genuine emotions rather than just feeling what the plot requires her to feel. Although there is a sequel, it feels like a complete story as well, which I love because there's nothing worse than a 'to be continued' delay to any sort of resolution.

This book takes the reader into a fantastic parallel world comparable to the one of the Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare but with its very own charm. I very much liked the character constellations even though I felt like the love story was rushed but this gets better in the following book. The relations are well worked out and it's interesting to discover the world of Dubh Linn as well as the many hidden relations and power games. All in All, I very much liked it.
