First third of the book is really slow paced, wish there was more world building at the beginning, but the book is unique.

I wanted to like this more, but I never completely got my hands around the world and characters. It is sci-fi horror, though it feels like fantasy horror for a good chunk of it. I needed more information upfront to understand the stakes and what was actually horror to the characters. It's still a great atmospheric gothic horror, I just don't know if it grabbed me enough to try it again and understand what's going on from the get go.

It's not perfect but this is exactly the kind of atmosphere I look for in gothic (and post-apocalyptic) fiction. Just enough information to profoundly unsettle... and a lot of body horror.
At its core, the book is blatantly about bodily autonomy and consent, but I cannot help but love the medical inclinations, existential musings, and rationalizations of the invasive hivemind parasite. It reminds me a bit of Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie in that way.

Stopped at the 85% mark. I really was intrigued by the first 40% of this one, but as things were revealed and made clearer, I was still confused enough to make it unenjoyable. Maybe there was a payoff at the very end. I would read something else by this author; I just didn’t understand the direction this took in the second half. Might be worth a reread.

DNF'd. Not my cup of tea. Great prose, though. No review.
