for a book published in 2022 ud think the author could come up with something other than appropriative deer monster but here we are i guess. vibes were there but tbh thats all i could really get a read on and i almost dnfd this book a few times but the medical horror angle intrigued me enough to finish it. wish it was better tbh i was hoping id love this one

an otherwise 4/5 (maybe even 5/5, the foreshadowing and parallels and worldbuilding is SO tasty) book let down by culturally appropriating an Algonquian cultural belief. it's really a plot element and they're divorced from cultural context, depicted inaccurately, and even the basic point of them is changed. LITERALLY JUST MAKE UP ANOTHER DEER MONSTER. CHRIST.
