I picked this up for my Kindle for free off of Amazon in the hopes that it would be really good because I really enjoy modern day fairy tales, but I was, sadly, disappointed. The premise and idea for this novel is really good; the execution, though, is kind of sub-par.

Mina's not very interesting. In fact, she's your basic cookie-cutter young adult protagonist who's a nobody at school with only one friend and a poor family, and her own flaw is she's ~clumsy~. What is going on in the water that every girl in the fifteen to eighteen range is so fucking clumsy all the time? She, of course, is not well liked by the popular girls (who are probably awful or something, as it normally goes, because anyone who dislikes the protagonist is awful) but she's crushing on the most popular boy in school (who she sort of gets with but then doesn't and it's weird, but Brody's boring so you shouldn't actually care).

There's some sub-par romance going on
where the only interesting part of the story is where Mina completing the fairytale wipes all the normal people's memories of what happened during that time to fade, including Brody, her amazing jock boyfriend, so sadface, no boyfriend for her. No one's actually sad because Jared's probably the real love interest because he makes himself so obvious

There's a small twist at the ending that's interesting and there's the potential for it to pick up in the later books, so I might give them a try if I have the time. Overall, it was just lucky I was able to read it quickly; if this book was much longer, I might have dropped it.

I enjoyed this book as I’m into fantasy and fairytales so this was right up my street. Was a quick easy read and have ordered the other books in the series. More for the younger teen around 12-14yrs so my teenage daughters will enjoy reading this series.

description

The cover is really interesting, I can't quite tell if her jumper is pink or red, but if it is red... then I like the way it links in with the story :0)

Mina Grime has always been unlucky. Every time her mother has moved their family, she has always instructed Mina to be unpopular and to just blend in with everyone else without drawing any attention to herself. But, when she saves the famous Brody, who is the complete opposite of her, attention suddenly swarms her. Then, from out of no-where, trouble comes hurling towards her as she finds out about her families true history and a powerful story that will risk her life and the those around her.

Mina was a great character. The way you saw her character develop, from appearing weak at the start to being a strong heroine, she immediately became likeable. Her family also comes first meaning she took on the challenge and threat of completing the Grimm's tales so her brother does not have the burden, this helped to show her dedication to the ones she loves.

However, my favourite character was Nan (Mina's best friend). She was hilarious! She is the complete opposite of Mina, she is the queen of social-ness, she loves social networking and she loves (and does) to stand out from the crowd. There was also her loyalty towards her best friend of which showed how far she would go to protect her and endanger herself if it meant she would save Mina.

I loved the way Chanda twisted and turned the fairy tales. The way they easily slot into her life, for example, all her clothes turning red. But when you are told about the links after they have happened, you get to one of those moments where you feel your mouth miming "Oh yeeeeah!" I found it kept me interested till the very end and cannot wait to find out which story evolves from the book next.

The next book in the series: Fairest.

I’ve never seen this book before in my life but it looks exactly the book I would pick up in 2013 so I guess I did. There’s some other ya book I loved with a genie, I gotta find it

This was a free download special through Bookhub.

I enjoyed this as YA. The main character seemed genuine and I could relate to a lot of her awkwardness. I enjoyed the twist on the Grimm fairytales.

My one big gripe (which is in most of my reviews about modern books, especially young adult ones) is WHY DOES EVERYTHING HAVE TO BE PART OF A SERIES NOW?? I miss being able to read a story and have the entire journey contained within one book!
