This book went in a direction I wasn't expecting but I loved it. So weird and creepy and super atmospheric. The audiobook was also incredible!

contrary to popular belief, this book didn’t start out slow. with each line written as poetry, i couldn’t stop turning the pages. the descriptions were everything, and i had to figure out what every little clue being dropped meant. the book takes you on a journey through time, back and forth between the present and 12 years prior when the main character’s father was arrested for murder (not a spoiler) and everything changed. the suspense was carried thoughtfully throughout the entire book, but my only complaint is the ending. it felt rushed, and out of place, and didn’t quite fit the rest of the poem. how everything unfolded could have been a great idea, but seeing as i was on the edge of my seat for the first 95% and then the climax of the story was squeezed into the last 15 pages and was, without a doubt, quite incomprehensible, i felt let down. overall, i do recommend this read, but be prepared for an absurd, dare i disappointing, ending.

I just wanted more from this book. The creepy vibes were definitely there but I would have liked more shocking/meaningful horror scenes. I also felt the story was lacking a little bit. Lots of storylines that were not fulling explained or given adequate background.

Spoiler I also thought it was predictable that the monster was her mom. And I hated that the monster ended up being the house itself.. the plot was just very bland

Coming home isn't easy when your home is the location of a former serial killer... who was your father. This is where he buried the bodies. *insert goosebumps here*

Vera is struggling with returning home, which is quite literally the scene of the crime(s). To make matters worse, there are creepy notes being left around the house, in her father's handwriting. Her money is on the mysterious new renter they have living in their back guesthouse, but he swears it's not him.

There are so many secrets buried deep within this house, and Vera will discover them all, if it's the last thing she does. *dun dun dun*

I loved this book, and read it during Halloween last year! It was perfect for spooky season, and lowkey gave me nightmares (which is kind of a good thing... or at least a testament to how truly creepy it is)

5/5 Stars.

*Gifted by Netgalley & Tor Books, thank you! All opinions are my own.
