Warning: This takes place in the early Covid days, so if that was traumatic for you, this is not the book for you
I loved this sequel almost as much as the original Lost For Words Bookshop. Lots of snippets of people’s lives being upended by illness, death and isolation and how a little bookshop played a small role in helping them. Added bonus of many great book suggestions.

4/5 stars!!!

I’m so impressed with this author’s ability to develop her characters so well despite such short chapters, all revolving around the complex lives of 10+ (maybe more!) people.

It was so interesting to read a novel that actually revolves around a time we have all lived through and experienced differently. She is able to touch on the various elements of life that the “new normal” of the COVID-19 pandemic gave to us all, either the happy times, the confusing ones, the tragic ones, the monotonous ones, the rage-filled ones, and the mind-f$&!@king ones.

I found myself feeling connected to so many characters, almost like I was part of their life, somehow…

I blazed through this in a day, and I found myself laughing, giggling, weeping a bit, and outraged at times. I’m just so amazed with stories that intertwine and connect people together like this, and this novel does a great job of that. It depicts the monotone, abnormal, fever-dream-like state of life that was the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown, real struggles with heartbreak, abuse, self-discovery and love, all while emphasizing the medicinal and powerful properties of literature, or, reading in general.

The only aspect of this book I wish we got more of was Zoe’s story. I couldn’t help but feel like we got a somewhat blurry ending for her, and maybe it’s just me empathizing for her so much, as she represents, to me, every single person that has experienced an unimaginable loss during the pandemic and the struggles that come witht grief, but i just wanted that reassurance that she would be “okay” (whatever that means!) and that she would be looked after by a community. Clearly, she adores reading now, and will be coming into the store more frequently (hopefully??!!) and meeting others. Let’s hope!
Zoe’s story (and even Rosemary’s and George’s) just shows how unexpected and completely unfair illness can be, and unfortunately, the abrupt nature of this is real life, and the author doesn’t shy away from showing that Zoe’s story is just one of many more very real ones there are, told or untold, in this world.

Other than that, this reading was everything from heart-warming to heart-wrenching, and I have a million new books on my “to be read”…..once again. What a beautiful idea that was so well executed. Wish there was something similar to “Book Prescriptions” in the Lost for Words bookstore in real life! Try and support your local libraries if you can!!
