imagine you leave for a long trip unannounced and within the week all your friends and neighbors move into your house and wait for you get back. this house has everything:

• your Based antisocial vagabond bestie who camps in your yard and plays wonderwall on the harmonica while refusing to be emotionally vulnerable about how sad he is that he didnt get a goodbye letter from you

• an old man with dementia who shouts about fishing and parties, and thinks his reflection is the 300 year old spirit of your great-grandfather who also lives inside your stove

• your histrionic, entomophobic karen of a neighbor who declutters your house & tries to steal your valuables

• a tiny sad orphan who moves into your wardrobe and ponders existentialism while reading about protozoa and who's frustration about not having a mom manifests into the babadook

• an insecure home depot dad who is bad at finishing all the home renovation projects he starts around your house

• and your sister in law, who is only there for the Drama, lounging on the furniture in a feather boa

must a book be pretentious in it's message? is it not enough for the author to channel her real-life grief into her quirky oc's? great book but WHEW very melancholic. i'm gonna go rewatch moominvalley just to feel some joy now

"I never looked at them very closely, they were just there, you know..." He fumbled for words, and went on tentatively: "They were just like things that are always around, if you see what I mean... Like trees, eh? ... or ... things."

I can, of course, try to reach out to them, yang mana udah pernah kulakukan dengan hasil nihil. Di satu titik, aku merasa nggak enak mengganggu ketenangan hidupnya. Sama seperti yang Snufkin bilang di buku ini: "Perhaps it isn't so difficult to find people who are hiding themselves and get them to come home again (...) But why, though Snufkin. Leave them alone. Perhaps they want to be left in peace too."
