This is my second book by Silvia Moreno this year, and once again, it doesn’t disappoint. It’s a stylish nod to the gothic tradition of British classics, with Englishmen imported to a castle in the Mexican mountains, blending horror and a love story. There’s something charmingly ‘pulpy’ about it, in the best possible way. The writing is accessible, the plot is engaging, and the concept feels fresh. Despite its readability, it’s far from superficial—there are references to Wuthering Heights, Ruth Benedict, and Margaret Mead, which add intellectual depth. The novel also brings an anthropological twist, touching on themes of native populations, colonialism, and the misogyny of the nobility. My only critique is that the 1950s setting feels underdeveloped and lacks the detail needed to fully evoke the era.

I really liked it! The mystery of it was really interesting and the imagery was really successfully unsettling

It was an interesting approach to the gothic horror genre. I feel like the first half felt like it was geared towards a younger audience than I was expecting, and then it got very dark and adult. I wish it was eerier from the start, it just felt like everything was wrong and off from the get go. But I liked Noemi and Francis and overall I enjoyed the plot.

I'd heard a lot about this book and went into it with kinda high expectations. I enjoy a good gothic setting, and my hold on it at the library came in at the perfect time of year! Unfortunately, those high expectations might have worked against it. I liked the prose, and I found Noemi to be a compelling and likeable main character. What I wasn't fond of, however, was the direction the plot took -
telepathic mushroom spores that an evil old man is harnessing to control his family is unique, I'll give it that, but I don't know if I'd say I enjoyed it as a plot twist
. I also didn't like how Noemi was set up as having all these ambitions in the beginning of the book,
but by the end that was forgotten in favor of a nothingburger of a romance
. Ultimately it's a three-star read for me - it kept me entertained but I doubt I'll ever re-read it.

It started out very strong but the big reveal and final confrontation was very lackluster and disappointing. The body horror and hose descriptions, however, did creep me out so some parts of the novel were successful. I also hated the actual ending. Definition of trite.
