Different than what I normally go to for devotional books, as it was like the furthest thing from thesis-driven, which I how I normally learn the best. But it was really great for what it was, and very beneficial for the way I think about God's role in suffering and emotional pain.

I fell in love with Voskamp's heart and style of writing while reading "1,000 Gifts." Both excited and cautious, I wasn't sure exactly what to expect from her latest offering. Would it disappoint me, given how high she had my hopes? After all, everyone knows the sequel is never as good.

While not actually a sequel to her first book, The Broken Way is a continuation of her spiritual journey. This is a path on which she encourages readers to join her. Her voice is distinct, lyrical, but her story is never unapproachable. She dares to bear hear broken heart in each chapter of the book, showing that while her walk with Christ hasn't been easy, its been worth it.

My book is marked through out - both with highlighter and pen, for when that extra-extra emphasis was needed. I definitely plan on picking it up at the first of next year for a re-read (allowing myself to re-member as Voskamp would phrase it) after it all has a chance to settle in my soul.

I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Such a deep read...practically every passage highlighted. I would read bits of this here and there. I didn’t want to rush it. A must read!

This one is tricky to review. The writing is flowery and for some portions, it is inspiring, while in others I found it boring and kept switching off. However, the couple of times I stuck with it for an hour or more, I found nuggets of gold in this one. Some sentences I wanted to go back and write down though I was walking and listening to it so couldn’t. Not sure I could make it through a second time to find those sentences though.

So meh in parts and great in parts.

The writing style was a bit too floral for my taste but Ann Voskamps vulnerability is something to be truly admired. I think that there is a lesson here for everyone.

I loved this book… I wish it would just keep going and going.

To be very clear, this is not a self-help book. This is not a “if you do ______ then ______ will happen.” This is a book written by a woman who has done a lot of living and reflecting and vulnerably shares her brokenness. This book is seeped in Biblical truth and invites the reader to pause and praise the God who redeems our brokenness. I feel richly blessed to have had the opportunity to sit with this book.
