Based on the content warnings this books sounds horrible, but I promise it is fantastic. It is an historical fiction/romance set in the 18th Century and post-WW2 Scotland, written in the late 1980s-early 1990s so it isn’t pristine in the sense of today’s sensibilities. That said, if you’re looking for an immersive, incredibly well-researched, thoughtfully-written, and unforgettable historical romance that generally defies genre, try this out.

I had high hopes for this book but I found the characters to be unlovable and annoying. Sex scenes are added as filler but feel disconnected and cheap. I also feel like the first half of the book is flooded with attempts to rape the main character with no benefit to the plot, just thrown in for graphic purposes. The story could be shortened considerably and the reader could enjoy a better world building experience if our main character wasn’t always portrayed as an object to rescue or have sex with.

I was enjoying this book very much for the first half, but it lost me in the second. The rapes, the wife beating, the villian suddenly being gay,..these things just didn’t work for me. Maybe I’m just reading this with current sensibilities but I don’t think they were handled well.

Also, it’s funny that the author insists that this isn’t a romance, since it could have been about 100 pages shorter if she cut out some of the sex scenes. I enjoy romance, but some of it just felt gratuitous.

I love Outlander. I didn't have a bad time reading this book (although it's rather long) but I didn't learn much more from what I did in the show. It's really similar and I don't think reading the book adds something to your experience with Outlander. However, it's a great book, well written with lovely characters and everything that I loved from the show.

Though I'm wondering about the end
why are they going to Italy ? because in the show they go to France in season 2
