Certainly problematic at times. If you're after sex and enchantment, stick to the TV show. If you want never ending conflict, and character backstory - the book is good. The narrator is incredible. This story will always hold a place in my heart, so perhaps I'm being a little biased in my rating.

The medical scenes aren't as detailed or as gory as the TV show. The sexual assault between a captor and prisoner descriptions are more graphic.

The premise of this is so unique and so so fun and engaging. The characters are a bit flat and sometimes do inexplicable things (not bc theyre in 1700s scotland) but overall it was extremely well paced, plotted, and executed. I was INVESTED. The characters are pretty well written and developed (sometimes) but it rly feels like ur in that time/place. At times it’s super dark but overall it feels like an exciting adventure (idk why cause things kinda sucked back then but still). The end is rly dark but not nearly as bad as the show.

I really wanted to like this more. I really enjoyed (and learned a lot) from the show and expected the book to be better and more informative.
