Modiano is not the most moving of authors, and his range is tiny, yet what he does he does amazingly. This is one of his best novels, in my opinion. A good place to start. Still, will never be my cup of tea exactly.

This book is ROUGH. I can see Modiano starting to develop this writing style, the melancholic, slippery, haunting prose we see in books such as SO YOU DON'T GET LOST IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD and SLEEP OF MEMORY.

However, this book is by younger Modiano. He hadn't yet fully leaned into his own take on surrealism and it shows.

I liked the writing and the tension throughout the entire novel. I wish there was some sense of resolution in the end, which is the only reason I don't want to jump up to 4 stars. Normally I'd be fine with an unresolved ending and in this case it really does make sense to the story, but for some reason, I didn't like it (maybe because it's already so short?). I'd recommend it, though, and at barely 120 pages, it's no big loss if you try reading it and don't like it.
