I read this book because I was doing research for a novel I'm planning to write in which a character has left an insular religious community. This book gave me a great sense of so many elements of what that experience might be like, from reasons for leaving to how the separation from the community is not a binary - how the exiter, as the author calls them, is always in the process of exiting, and how their background still informs and affects their current experience. The book considers the aggregate, but also looks at individual experiences. The author is someone who left an ultra-Orthodox Jewish community himself, and he interviewed numerous other people who had done the same. An iinformative, well-organized, readable book that looks at a larger picture while still zooming in on individual experiences.
