What the fuck was this?

The first three issues collected in here are three unrelated villains, who come from nowhere, and are dispatched. And then an awful story develops about... I lost the will. This is one of those very VERY rare comics that I couldn't even be arsed to read, so wretched was it. I mean, really, just awful.

I enjoyed this more than the first volume in the new Detective Comics run. This ended up being a series of short stories, basically, covering a variety of the Batman villains in different escapades. I especially liked the flashback into pre-Batman of Bruce training in Japan.

Definitely curious to see what direction this series will take. It's still very dark and brooding feeling, especially the final few scenes with something finally being set up with the Joker twists in the first volume.

The Detective Comics branch of the Bat titles focus more on the detective work. Shocker, I know. And after reading the disappointing Joker story over in the Batman title, it was a welcome change. Nothing special about this book, but nothing bad about it either.

This is definitely the weaker of the current Batbooks. This is only the second volume and it's already the second riot at Arkham. I can't wait to see it happen all over again next book. I would have given this two stars, but there was a single issue story in hear about Batman training that was very good. Too bad the surrounding material isn't on the same level.
Also, since when does Black Mask control minds?

This is not a good Batman title. Better than volume 1, but that's pretty faint praise.

A series of thematically related but not narratively connected stories involving fear and manipulation make up this collection of fairly pedestrian Batman stories.

The flow from the Catwoman/Scarecrow story into the Toxin storyline gives the impression that they will be more connected than they are. You suspect maybe there is a mastermind behind both events, but it ends up being just a coincidence that we get two toxin (not Toxin) related stories in a row. Then we follow up the Night Of Owls storyline with what happened with Black Mask after the riot at Arkham's. It pulls in a few other B-level villains and it ends up being okay but never very exciting, and never actually a mystery.

The book ends with some short stories mostly by other writers, and they're also ... fine. A typical story about Bruce's pre-Batman days where an author throws Asian Mysticism stereotypes at a love story and then clears the deck of all the characters. I think if you were to add up all the stories about Bruce's time learning to be Batman, he'd have spent 100 years training. There's also a Two Face story in here that I couldn't bother to finish reading. The colors were too dark, the story was too dull, so I checked out. The final story about hazing a new cop who has to work in the office with the Joker's removed face was a fun way to end the book, as it's relatively light but also hints at the next giant crossover.

If you're reading a ton of Batman books, this could easily be one to put on the pile. But it's nowhere near necessary to understanding the New 52 era, nor is it ever going to be considered classis Bat=canon.
