Rating largely reflects having too high expectations... fascinating in parts, but very jarring in others

I love memoirs and enjoyed the format of this one, I've never read a graphic novel memoir. This gave great insight into what it was like growing up during the Iranian Revolution as well as how war ravages a country. This was especially eye-opening for me because she was 14 when she left Iran for Austria, the same age my dad was when he left home for better opportunities. All of the stories she told of how difficult it was to be on her own at that age made my heart ache for my dad, for her, and for all of the other children who were displaced due to violence, oppression, or lack of resources.

Before I read this book I knew nothing about Tehran. Even though it is a graphic novel, I found it very information and quite humorous. Wherever you live you could relate to Marjane and her adventures. I really enjoyed this book.
