Short Review
This book was amazing. I love the drama and the plot twists. I do wish the ending was a little less rushed but all in all it was a very good read.

Long Review:
Pros - I loved how the author intertwined Wyatt’s journey of trans hood throughout the story. He was apart of him rather than all he was.

Cons - All the resolutions in the story were revealed at the end. Which would’ve been a cool plot twist but I could’ve help but feel it was a little rushed. Maybe have  more breadcrumbs sprinkled in before it happened would’ve given the book the best ending it could’ve had.

Overall -This book is a 4.5 stars with a brilliant story and a creative use of tranness that opens doors to important discussions throughout the book.

Wyatt is a very complicated and traumatized character, but he feels very real and very human, and probably pretty relatable to a lot of readers.  His decisions, though self-sabotaging, are understandable and propel the plot forward without being frustrating or irritating.  The supporting cast is good.  The antagonists felt realistic and threatening for most of the book, up until the end, where they suddenly felt caricatured (one of them goes on a classic villain How I Did It monologue, which, while helpful for understanding the behind-the-scenes machinations that lead up to the twist, felt like the author turning to the readers and saying "here's a bunch of information I couldn't figure out how to get into the book any other way, enjoy the monologue," and I didn't care for it too much).

The story ends with a clear segue into a sequel, but enough of the book-one-specific plot threads wrapped up that it doesn't feel incomplete or like a cop out. I'll definitely read the sequel when I can get my hands on it.

Dani Martineck is an excellent narrator!

This book was enjoyable in some ways, but suffers from a whole lot of tonal dissonance. It felt like every couple of pages we swung from fluffy fanfic romance (there was only one bed!) to horrifying gore and betrayal. The writing itself is beautiful, but I think cutting a few lines and a couple plot-twists would have made the story flow more smoothly and strengthened the book as a whole. They may be setting up the sequel, but the ending felt rather abrupt because of it.

Originally rated it a 5 stars after reading, now I rate it a 4 as I read another 5 star read directly after it and started comparing the two experiences. I saw many reviews criticizing the world building, and how it didn’t make sense, or how they didn’t like the main character Wyatt. Personally, I came into it expecting a feel good sappy fantasy with a romance plot, and it provided just that. I didn’t read it for the complex world building and magic system. I read it purely for good vibes and it delivered, which is why I liked it. EDIT: now 3.5 stars after many months.
