Grabbed my attention at the start and the end, lost me in the middle. Altogether too involved in its own symbolism and musings on agony and pleasure. But this is still a bomb of immorality that is as courageous as it is sleazy—as it’s meant to be, so really, they’re the same thing here.

This is fascinating to me as a piece of transgressive literature, but it’s not something that at all moved me or, given the stuff I’ve read in recent years, shocked me.

I have to be honest and say that I didn't quite get the book in the same way everyone else seems to have and I thought the constant referring to have "raped" such and such was a bit distressing. I am not entirely sure if the word raped was used in the sense that it is used now, or if the author utilised it to describe having sex with Simone in a more dominant way? I feel as though he regularly used the word raped to describe having sex with others and whilst I don't doubt that the character was a rapist, I do think this word was used differently to how it would now be used. But maybe that's just me!

Referring back to the not getting the book- I completely and utterly didn't and thought it was honestly so absurd. I did end up reading the little post-text , the completely freaky nature made more sense. I also enjoyed reading that info about the authors life!

Having said that, it was VERY short, and VERY weird!! normally look for weird in books, but this was like next level freakishness.

Definitely an experience. Definitely something. In essence, Story of the Eye is a semi-surrealist stream of consciousness about debauchery for debauchery's sake, circling back over and over and over again to urine and eggs and testicles and so much...SO much weird sex. I find it VERY funny that this was Bataille's first work after leaving the Catholic church.
