Taran’s growth was wonderful and host of characters, well- and ill-met, were so entertaining. this may be my favorite installment so far!

This book differs a bit from the other adventures in the Prydain Chronicles in that it focuses more on Taran's character development and curiosity about where he comes from, rather than the friends questing against an enemy. I enjoyed watching Taran struggle with some hard choices, and I look forward to seeing how Eilonwy has developed in the meantime. The other characters are much the same as they always were, and Taran's quest is a bit more episodic that his other journeys seemed to be.
I found many aspects of this series enjoyable, but there isn't quite enough to keep me hooked. It's too easy to set Prydain down in favor of something else, because it doesn't contain a plot where I'm dying to know what happens, nor is there a lot going on in the character relationships to drive the book along. It's pleasant, but I'm hoping The High King picks up the pace a bit.

So far this is my favorite book in the series. The main character learns who he is as a person through interactions with others and trying many things, I believe this was very formative for me when I read it as a child.
