More autobiography about the writing process than historical biography. I certainly enjoyed parts of it, the translation was well done. I felt that the research was lacking.

Ruotsalaisen Karolina Ramqvistin aiheena on Marguerite de la Rocque, 1500-luvulla elänyt nainen, joka matkasi holhoojansa kanssa tutkimusmatkalle nykyiseen Kanadaan. Matkalla hänet hylättiin autiolle saarelle, jossa hän onnistui selviytymään hengissä joidenkin vuosien ajan, kunnes hänet pelastettiin.
Tämä on kiehtova kertomus selviytymisestä, sellainen todella mielenkiintoinen ja huomiota herättävä ihmiskohtalo, josta lukisi mieluusti kirjan. Valitettavasti Ramqvist on lopulta kiinnostuneempi autobiografisesta navankaivelusta. Kyllä – tämä on yksi niistä kirjoista, joissa pääpaino on siinä, miten kirjailija kirjoittaa kirjaansa ja on vaikeaa ja työlästä. Olisi ehkä pitänyt arvata, kun takakannessakin rinnastettiin Marguerite de la Rocque ja Karoliina Ramqvist yhtä lailla vaikuttaviksi naisiksi. Anteeksi nyt vain, mutta: ei.
Ramqvistin pohdinnoilla on hetkensä. En ole täysin tällaista tyyliä vastaan, Mia Kankimäen kirjoista esimerkiksi olen kyllä pitänyt. Ramqvist on itsestään kirjoittaessaan parhaimmillaan silloin kun kertoo siitä, millainen prosessi 1500-luvulla eläneestä henkilöstä kirjoittaminen on, millaisia vaikeuksia vaikkapa tiedonhankintaan liittyy. Ei ole mitenkään itsestään selvää, että 1500-luvun tapahtumista saisi 2000-luvulla luotettavaa tietoa. Edes joku niinkin yksinkertaiselta tuntuva asia kuin tieto siitä, millaisilla laivoilla 1540-luvulla purjehdittiin, ei ole mitenkään helppo asia selvittää. Kuvia ei vain ole tuosta noin vain saatavilla.
Valitettavasti ison osan ajasta Ramqvist pyörii aiheensa kannalta täysin yhdentekevissä oman elämänsä kiemuroissa. En sano, etteikö niistäkin joku saisi jotain irti, mutta minä olisin toivonut fokuksen pysyvän tiukemmin Marguerite de la Rocquessa, joka nyt tuntui jäävän aivan sivuosaan. Onneksi kirja oli sentään nopealukuinen.

A strange mix of auto-fiction and history, this book follows an author as she conducts research on a real historical figure (the bear woman) for a book/screenplay she is writing.
This book follows the author in her research but also in her personal life and has a distinctly fractured structure where thoughts and incidents bounce around, are discarded and revisited in a slightly chaotic order.
You do get the outline of the story of the bear women mixed in with this but the author makes it clear that some of the narrative is from her imagination and illustrates how authors often use the sparseness of information as a way of spinning their own creative narrative.
This is much more about writing and research than it is about the bear woman.

This was not what I was expecting at all, from the description I was anticipating a duel timeline historical fiction. I think that the promotional methods went a bit wrong.
Fortunately I do enjoy this kind of deeply introspective book and generally enjoyed the reading experience. There really wasn’t much in the way of plot or linear story telling which made me a bit more passive in my reading but quite a relaxing writing style despite the occasionally intense subject matter.

I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a very meandering read and who is interested in the ways that writing can be informed and inspired by real life.
