Here's what I had to say about this in an email from way back yonder in 2006: "I remember really liking Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World. Caveat: I read it in my postmodern lit class freshman year of college when I hated everything they were making us read because I DID NOT
UNDERSTAND POSTMODERNISM, so it might have just seemed really good in contrast."

reading murakami is the equivalent of having a conversation with that one distant uncle: his eyes are sad and a little bit drunk, and maybe you're sad and drunk too, and every once in a while he says something weird about women but you just sigh and move on because his lore runs deep and the stories he tells are so intriguing and profound that you can't help but keep listening

Although lengthy, Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World is an excellent title for this work. Expect 'hard-boiled' detective work, 'wonderland'-like occurrences, and something strange to do with 'the end of the world.'

This was the book that got me into Murakami. He never disappoints. He is incredibly creative in all of his stories, and this is no exception. The plot can get a bit slow at times, but stick with this book; it's worth it. Murakami is such a fantastic author!
