I kick myself for not finishing this book when I was a kid but now that I did, I can easily say this is closure for me. Some stuff in this book kinda molded my personality and vernacular (I oftentimes say "if only, if only" and before I read the book, I used to say "whenever you're at the bottom, all you can do is look up" so when I read it in the book, I'm like "sweet, I'm not the only one that sees life that way").
I think I'm ready to watch the movie now but yeah, great book, definitely a must-read.

Holes by Louis Sachar has been on my mental TBR for awhile. Funny story I was adding this book to my LibraryThing (which also can track movies and video games), and it kept giving my Holes Sigourney Weaver not Holes Louis Sachar, and I could NOT for the life of me remember who she played in the movie. While I was listening to the book the character of The Warden is introduced and I remembered immediately

Great book. I am reading books that my boys will read will they get a little older and I am definitely putting this one on the must read list. I was pleasantly surprised by this book in so many ways. It was such a fun read.

This is my third read of this book. The first time was when I was in seventh grade and randomly picked it off of my home room teacher’s shelf. The second was in high school. 10+ years later, this book is still amazing.
This book has the heart that so many books lack today. I cannot say enough good things about it.

Reread this in Namibia when I was living in the desert. I remember the read being really satisfying at the time. :) The themes and characters have a special place in my heart, and I would recommend to adults who enjoyed the book or movie as a child to go back and read/reread.

This book is excellent for using in the classroom. Holes has themes such as racism, curses, friendship, and many others. It is wonderful for teaching literary elements such as foreshadowing and flashbacks. The students really get into this read because they can relate to feeling like they have bad luck like Stanley Yelnats IV. The issues that he faces at school and at Camp Green Lake are relatable to anyone of school age who has had difficult times in their life. I like this book because it offers hope in the midst of bad stuff happening.

A pretty straight forward, milquetoast, enjoyable read. Admittedly a bit older than the intended audience for this book, I'm glad I read it. Did I know where the book was heading? Sure. Did I feel I wanted some more character shading from the supporting cast? That would've been nice. Was Stanley a pretty cookie cutter lead character? I would say so. That said, I had fun following the story, I never felt bored by what was going on.
I don't mean this entire thing to be a backhanded compliment of a review. I did genuinely like the narrative and how it all went down. It's and easy, breezy, solid summer read. I recommend everyone check it out. It's a fun read, no all that challenging, and I think most people will come away satisfied having read it.

This is my oldest son's favorite book, so I decided I should read it. It's very fast-paced and character driven, and most things tie up nicely at the end for a "happy ending," but the book covers a lot of dark ground as well. At a minimum, it gives me some starting points for discussion with him about some serious adult "stuff." However, I think the book accomplishes much more than that. I would recommend it for any pre-middle school boy....and his dad.

Read for work. Not super impressed, to be honest, but I'm also not the target audience. I think if I'd been much younger I'd have enjoyed a lot more.
It did keep me reading, though - Sachar does a great job building tension!
