Dirty White Boys delivers action scenes and depravity galore wrapped up in an Oklahoma accent. If you are looking for a Jack Reacher or Lucas Davenport substitute I would recommend you keep looking. If you want a decent action plot and don't care about good dialogue this book may be a favorite. I thought this book might have a tie to This author's Bob Lee Swagger character but it was slight and tenuous. This was a low 3 star book but it did finish on an upswing by building to the conclusion over the last 75 pages.

Smooth enough read, but I wasn’t invested in anyone’s fate.

A flawed hero in Bud Pewtie. A disgusting, violent bad guy in Lamar Pye. A story only tangentially related to the Bob Lee Swagger/Earl Swagger series. (Earl killed Lamar's dad in Black Light.) Having said all that, a well written book that moved fast.

Lamar and his gang break out of prison and go on a killing spree. Bud tries to chase them down. He gets close. They get away. And again. And again. Eventually it comes down to the 2 of them.

Here's the thing---I'm a bit of a literary snob. So when I read a book like Dirty White Boys---a book that is unabashedly bereft of depth, meaning, significance, or artistry---the best possible rating I'm going to give it is 3 stars.

Dirty White Boys absolutely fulfills its purpose, which is to entertain. It's got escaped convicts, the cop trying to chase them down, and lots of gunfights. The characters are not cliched---the bad guy has appealing characteristics, and the good guy has loathsome characteristics. It's easy to feel both affinity for and aversion to them both. Bottom line, the book is simple and entertaining. No more, but no less. I liked it. Three stars.
