This is the first comic I ever read, and I had hoped it would hold up to any modern scrutiny. Turns out this is still a really engaging story, following Superman and Batman from 1939-1999 and beyond as if they aged in real time and the time periods reflect the change in tone. It's inventive and very well drawn, and what may seem gimmicky ends up separating it from the pack.

I actually really enjoyed the first segment, which was 1939 Superman & Batman with modern storytelling. But the book got progressively odder and less enjoyable as the years went on; it was simultaneously too silly and too dark all at once, a sort of emotional whiplash that didn't work in either direction.

Follows the careers of Batman and Superman, starting in 1939 and finishing... oh wait, that'd be a spoiler!

It's a great take on the dynamic duo, focusing on what they tick and how their friendships blossomed over the years. The first two chapters are great to read, especially in the way Batman is humanized. The third chapter is brutal for what it is, but all that is redeemed by the end.

Highly recommended if you're a fan of either of these two titans.
