I think it had the potential to be great, but the author only scratched the surface of what this world could be.

Annie is an AI robot who was created to please her owner. As she interacts with Doug, she gains emotional intelligence and becomes more human. It was totally fascinating to watch her piece things together - to understand what behaviors are more pleasing to Doug, what behaviors upset him, and how to regulate herself in a way that keeps him happy.

This short book was the perfect exploration - any longer and the premise would have become ridiculous. There is so much book club fodder here, and while some may shy away from the sexual content of the book, it really is the most interesting piece to debate.

Through this creative lens, Greer pushes her reader to explore themes of misogyny, feminism, and relationship dynamics. I really enjoyed the first half, but did feel like the second half fell off a little bit. I didn’t love the choices the author took, but overall, I think the book provides some excellent points to ponder.

Creepy idea well-executed from a brainwashed perspective, very unsettling. Pacing was strange.

Spent the last quarter of the book waiting for something to happen, and was disappointed. Ending felt like we went in a circle instead of a new start. Questions unanswered.
