It's been a minute since I've read such a beautiful piece of literature. Silko's prose is masterful and moody, dipping into Tayo's story as well as some history of the Laguna reservation and old folklore stories. The story isn't quite linear and often skips small portions of time in between events, but it's never jarring or abrupt. Everyone should read this at least once.

Read for school. I thought I could make it through but I just couldn’t. I know that probably had to do with the fact that it was assigned reading but it just wasn’t for me.

was supposed to read this book for school, and thus it felt like a chore. i feel bad because this book did not get a fair chance and in the future I will probably never give it another try, but I just did not enjoy reading this style of writing

A novel about a veteran's quest to find his bearings on returning from World War II's pacific theater, and a story about a culture's efforts at survival in the face of upheaval and an evil of chaos and disorder. The trauma, loss, and travels of the veteran, Tayo, are both his own and symbolic of his people. The titular ceremony, performed by a medicine man, provides Tayo a measure of solace and understanding. The narrative structure is unique, complicated, compelling. This outsider found new perspective.
