At face value, this is a charming memoir about starting an art gallery in the Northeast Arts District in Minneapolis. But it’s also much more than that.

It’s about making a home far away from where you are from. It’s about building and finding strength in community. It’s a snapshot of the Northeast neighborhood in Minneapolis. It’s about experimenting with the interplay between fine art and science, video games, comics, bicycles, and, well, everyday life. And it’s also an exploration of nonprofit organizational and leadership models.

It’s Never Going to Work is a quick and fun read; Schumacher’s writing is light and breezy, and she paints her experiences with humor, wit, and just a pinch of self-deprecation. But don’t be fooled! Beneath this sweet story is also a ton of information about nonprofit models, leadership, development, scaling, relationship building, creativity, and more. I learned so much from this book that I immediately brought it to work to share with my entire office.

If you’re someone who is personally or professionally interested in the arts or nonprofits, there is something for you in this book.
