what i need now are: antidepressants, vodka (ironically, it's the sober-month or something) and tapenada. that's the only way in which i can read the next volume without being even more depressed.

I like how well he describes the actions of mentally ill persons.

The first part is the most fun, like Trainspotting meets Pride and Prejudice.

Never Mind: This is the first book in a trilogy, and the characters who appear in the trilogy also turn up later in Mother's Milk. The book I have is actually the trilogy published as a single volume under the title Some Hope which is the title of the third part.

I was contemplating reading the trilogy as a single book, since that's really how it has been packaged, but at the end of the first volume I couldn't find the energy to carry on. Interesting (often hideous) characters, and fine writing, but nothing much in the way of a story to make me want to read on.

I may return for more. I may not.
