WHAT THE HECK? I wanted to read this book because I didn't know how I felt about Levana, but now I'm even more confused. I hate her but I also feel really bad for her...but I HATE HER. Ugh what the heck. Anyway, I'm super excited for Winter now!!

Cinder, Scarlet, and Cress are must reads before picking up this novella.

Queen Levana's back-story is an enjoyable edition to The Lunar Chronicles. It's easy to feel moments of mild sympathy toward the lonely young Levana but she remains a twisted selfish character whose evil increases with age. We learn more about Queen Channery and young Selena and Winter, allusions to Cress, and hints to how Scarlet is faring on Luna. I loved Queen Levana's spectacular hatred toward Cinder and her reaction to her thwarted plans at the end of Cress.

And, the first four chapters of Winter are such a tease. Nearly a ten month wait... No fair!

It was fun to hear more about Levana's story. Even though she is completely bat shit crazy! But for good reason... That whole family has some issues.

I would have given this five stars if not for the uncomfortable subject matter which was slightly difficult for me to read.

Besides that, this was really engaging and made some neat references to small parts of the previous books which I enjoyed. It was definitely intersting to see Levana's motivations and thoughts as well as her backstory. I'm also really glad that she wasn't framed as 'misunderstood' or a character in need of redemption. Even though Levana tries to tell herself she is doing what she does for her people as well as her self, as a reader we are not lead to see these choices as justified.

In short, a very intruiging novella showing an interesting depth into the backstory and motivations of Levana. (It's definitely heightened my excitement for Winter!)

I enjoyed getting to know more of the Lunar world and how some of the laws came into effect. The backstory in Levana made you feel for her and give you a better understanding of the relationships in her life and her upbringing. with that being said, I still think that Levana has made unforgiving choices in her life. It may have been because of her poor upbringing and lack of role models but nevertheless still very wrong. Channary was a nightmare and probably was the cause of why Levana turned out so horribly.

This book solidified my hatred of Levana. Very well written - but boy is she the literal worst.
